Tart, wild, and worth every bite. The native plum that feeds everything.

Prunus americana, the American Plum, is the most widely distributed native plum in North America, a tough, thicket-forming small tree that produces clouds of fragrant white blossoms in early spring and heavy crops of small, tart, deeply flavored plums in late summer. It has fed Indigenous peoples, settlers, wildlife, and foragers for thousands of years and is still one of the most productive and ecologically valuable native trees you can plant. It grows on poor soils, tolerates drought, spreads by root suckers to form dense wildlife cover, and blooms early enough to be a critical first nectar source for pollinators in spring. If you are looking to buy American Plum seeds or grow native plum from seed, this is the edible native that asks for almost nothing and gives back more than you expect.

  • Fragrant white blossoms in early spring among the earliest flowering native trees, critical for pollinators
  • Heavy crops of small, tart, richly flavored plums used for jelly, wine, and fresh eating
  • Native across nearly the entire eastern and central United States, adaptable to a wide range of soils
  • Spreads by root suckers to form dense wildlife cover and thicket habitat for birds and mammals
  • Extremely drought-tolerant and low-maintenance once established

Things you probably did not know about the American Plum

Indigenous peoples selectively cultivated it long before European contact.
Evidence from archaeological sites across the Great Plains and Midwest shows that Native American communities maintained American Plum thickets near villages, transplanting suckers and protecting favored trees. The plums were dried for winter food, fermented into beverages, and the bark was used medicinally. It was one of the most deliberately managed native fruit plants in pre-contact North America.

The thickets it forms are some of the most important small mammal habitat available.
American Plum thickets, with their dense thorny branching and multiple stems, provide ideal nesting and escape cover for cottontail rabbits, quail, pheasant, and dozens of songbird species. Wildlife biologists recommend American Plum specifically for habitat plantings in areas where brushy cover has been reduced by intensive agriculture.

The early bloom is more important than most gardeners realize.
American Plum blooms in early to mid-spring, two to four weeks before most other native flowering trees, at the precise moment when queen bumblebees, mining bees, and early mason bees are emerging from winter dormancy and desperately need pollen and nectar. A single blooming American Plum tree can support the founding of dozens of native bee colonies that would otherwise struggle to establish.

It was selected and improved by horticulturists in the 1800s.
The American Plum was taken seriously as a rootstock and scion material by fruit breeders in the 19th century. Dozens of named varieties were selected for improved fruit size, sweetness, and flavor. The wild species remains the most adaptable and ecologically valuable, but the history of its cultivation by early American horticulturists is largely forgotten.

The shelves sag away from the wall overtime
Color: White, Number Of Shelves: 2, Size: 15.7in, Color: White, Number Of Shelves: 2, Size: 15.7in
Although the wood quality and finish of the shelf are clean and well-made, the main issue is that the shelves begin to sag over time while holding around 10 pounds, even though the product listing claims they can support up to 20 pounds. They may perform better on a brick wall, but on drywall you should be cautious. To fix the problem, I had to purchase floating shelf brackets for support, which solved the sagging issue. However, this defeats the purpose of the “floating” aesthetic. Since the shelf is in my bedroom, I can overlook it, but I personally wouldn’t install these in a common area if I wanted a clean floating look.

Looks nice, easy to install
Color: Rustic Brown, Number Of Shelves: 2, Size: 22in
This shelf is lightweight, looks nice, and was easy to install. It comes with a little level to help you install it properly. There are plenty of mounting holes to choose from, so it is easy to screw it directly into a stud, or to just use holes that are convenient for you. It comes with a plethora of mounting hardware. I mounted mine a bit high up and chose to mount it upside down so that I wouldn't see the three screws that hold the shelf to the mounting bracket.

Solid Floating Shelves 🛠️🏠
Color: Black, Number Of Shelves: 4, Size: 15.7in
I have installed four sets of the black floating shelves in my office. They are made of high quality materials, featuring a sophisticated black woodgrain finish with a natural texture. Supposedly, each unit can handle up to 22 pounds, though I would not recommend testing that limit with your vintage bowling ball collection if you value your flooring. They are awesome. The value is good for a set of two. Each shelf measures 22x7x1 (56x17x3 cm) inches, providing a decent amount of storage for books or decor. The installation was straightforward since the hardware for multiple wall types was included. They work well in the kitchen for spices or in the bedroom for personal belongings. One tip for a secure fit: use a level during installation and make sure the bracket is flush against the wall before sliding the shelf on, or your photos might look like they are sliding off a mountain 📐 These shelves offer a clean, modern look and stay stable once mounted correctly. They are a practical choice for adding functional display space to any room 🖼️

Good looking shelves and easy install - skip the included drywall anchors
Color: Black, Number Of Shelves: 2, Size: 22in
I installed these shelves in a bedroom to get things off my dresser and some decor. Once mounted they look really nice. The black finish looks clean and modern and they blend in well with the room. Installation was pretty straightforward. The metal bracket mounts to the wall first and then the shelf slides over the bracket. As long as you take your time lining things up it’s a simple project. One thing I strongly recommend is not using the white plastic self-drilling drywall anchors that come with the kit. I’ve used that style before on other projects and they tend to strip out easily and leave larger holes in drywall. I used better anchors instead and the shelves mounted much more securely. The rest of the hardware worked fine and once installed the shelves feel solid and hold items well. Pros - Clean modern look - Easy installation - Feels solid once mounted - Good size for books or decor Cons - The small level included isn’t very accurate — use your own level - One of the metal brackets was slightly bent out of the box but straightened out easily Helpful tip: Use your own level and better drywall anchors if you have them. It makes installation easier and the shelves will mount much more securely. Final thoughts: For the price these are nice looking floating shelves that install easily and work well for light storage and decor.
